The new year has brought new opportunities for my capstone. Dr. Brazier has been extremely busy around the holidays, so he could not meet up with me up until the new year. I met up with him today for almost an hour and talked about what i can do specifically to complete this capstone. I asked him quite a few questions about therapy tecniques and the basic problems he has with children therapy. Something I really found interesting was "play therapy." Since children aren't going to sit down and talk about their feelings therapists let them play with blocks, dolls, and other toys. The therapist analyzes their behavior and gets information about them through their play. Since I want to work with kids, and the most common problem for kids is transitioning to middle school, Drew wants me to do 6 weeks of research to develope legitimate tips to surviving middle school. We're hoping that with his Doctor name on the paper we can get the tips distributed to several schools.
I finally got a mentor today. After changing my topic numerous times, I have decided to use my interest in psychology as my theme for this project. Today I talked to Dr. Drew Brazier, a licensed therapist, at Optimal Solutions about becoming my mentor. I was originally worried that he wouldn't have time to work with me or that I wouldn't be able to complete all of my community service hours considering their patient confidentiality policy. There is a lot of stuff that I can ask Dr. Brazier about, but cannot see for myself. However, he seemed very excited about the project, and said there is lots that I can do. I spent about an hour talking to him about ideas for this project. One of the main things he wants me to do is to read his blog http://itaintadiet.com/ and keep up with it. He said that I could be a guest speaker, and add my own articles to it.
